Who we are
The Micro Industries Development Assistance and Services (MIDAS) was established with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as the sole private organisation dedicated to fostering the development of a robust, dynamic, and sustainable micro, small, and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) sector in Bangladesh. The initiative recognised the sector’s strategic importance in promoting entrepreneurship, generating employment, fostering innovation, and advancing inclusive and sustainable economic growth. In view of the breadth and scope of its intended activities, MIDAS was formally registered as a non-government and not-for-profit organization in 1982.
In 1981, USAID, through its Rural Industrial Project, signed a Cooperative Agreement with The Asia Foundation, which acted as an intermediary to channel and administer USAID assistance to MIDAS in support of its stated vision and mission.
Subsequently, under a Cooperative Agreement signed in 1985, USAID provided loan and equity funds to operationalise MIDAS’s mandate and translate its development objectives into tangible outcomes. This financial and institutional support enabled MIDAS to embark on a business-oriented approach to enterprise development, laying the foundation for its sustained engagement in promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening micro and small enterprises, and expanding economic opportunities in Bangladesh.
To sustain the momentum of its development initiatives and establish a more robust institutional and legal framework for its expanding operations, MIDAS was incorporated as a limited company on 30 December 1992. This transition marked a significant milestone in its institutional evolution, strengthening its organisational foundation and providing a formal corporate structure to support the continuity, growth, and effective delivery of its development mandate.
Building on more than four decades of institutional experience, MIDAS has evolved into a leading private-sector development organization in Bangladesh, providing high-quality services to enterprises and government institutions. Its institutional legacy reflects a sustained commitment to entrepreneurship development, enterprise growth and the advancement of a more inclusive and dynamic private sector.
