WE MOURN-MR. S. M. AL-HUSAINY

With profound sorrow, MIDAS announces the passing of Mr. S. M. Al-Husainy, esteemed Director and longest-serving Chairman of the MIDAS Board (2003–2014), on May 28, 2025.

إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

Mr. Al-Husainy was a distinguished visionary whose contributions shaped Bangladesh’s public and private sectors. A brilliant scholar, he studied Physics and Electrical Engineering at Calcutta University before starting a distinguished public service career with the Government of East Pakistan in 1950.

As General Manager of EPWAPDA, he played a key role in advancing Bangladesh’s power infrastructure, elevating generation capacity to 500 MW. His exceptional service earned him prestigious honours, including the Tamgha-i-Quaid-i-Azam (1963) and Sitara-i-Khidmat (1969).

Following Bangladesh’s independence, Mr. Al-Husainy was appointed Secretary to the Government of Bangladesh in 1972. He was a long-standing Member of the Bangladesh Bank Board and served in leadership roles at Bangladesh Biman, Bangladesh Shilpa Bank, Bangladesh Shilpa Rin Sangstha (now part of BDBL), and IPDC. As the Founding Chairman of SABINCO and Managing Director of Bangladesh Krishi Bank, he significantly influenced the nation’s financial and industrial sectors.

A revered leader in engineering, he twice presided over the Institute of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB), earning the IEB Gold Medal for professional excellence. His global expertise was sought by ADB, The World Bank, UNDP, UNICEF, and UNESCO.

In academia, Mr. Al-Husainy was a founding Trustee of ESTCDT, the organization behind Independent University Bangladesh (IUB), and its first Governing Council Chairman. He also chaired MIDAS and Chittagong Independent University, championing innovation and education. His dedication to social service was honoured with the Ahsania Gold Medal, and he continued to serve as Vice President of the National Executive Council of the National Heart Foundation. The MIDAS Team mourns the passing of this extraordinary leader and extends heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in eternal peace. His unwavering commitment to service, excellence, and progress will continue to inspire generations.
